Plettenberg Bay, which is situated in the heart of the Garden Route (South Africa), provides endless activities for the adventurous traveler. Monkeyland - a first of its kind in the world is a primate sanctuary with Ape and Monkey from all over the world. Safaris conducted by professional rangers through the forest are offered. The animals are not caged and roam freely in this living forest. This provides for an unforgettable experience. Or you can join on a sunset yacht cruise on the luxury yacht the Outeniqua, in the Knysna Bay, and enjoy champagne and oysters as the sun sets.
Adventure activities are conducted by a company called Storms River Adventures. Their activities include kayak trips out at sea, diving in the Tsitsikama River, Forest tree Top tours, abseiling off scenic cliffs, blackwater tubing, mountain biking, guided hikes and many more. Other adventure activities include the world's highest bungi jump, skydiving, Shark cage diving and quad biking through the Knysna Forest.
Visit Buffalo Hills Private Game Reserve 15km outside Plettenberg Bay. It's a unique game reserve with Buffalo, Rhino, Giraffe, Sable, Leopard, Zebra, Kudu, Eland, Bushbuck, Impala, and many more not to mention more than 150 species of birds. The introduction of Lion and Elephant is being planned. Daytrips include a game drive or walk in the accompaniment of an experienced ranger, famous mampoer tasting and refreshments.
For the traveler wanting to experience a large-scale game reserve with the Big Five, visit Shamwari Big Five Game Reserve. Day trips can be arranged with a flight from Plettenberg Airport (5 minutes from the hotel) to Shamwari. This will include a game drive, refreshments and a lunch.
Knysna Elephant Park provides an exclusive safari, walking with Elephant through the forests. This is a close-up experience where Elephant can be touched and closely examined. Two separate companies provide scenic trips in the air. The trips are conducted daily in small, comfortable planes above the coastline to experience this from a different perspective. Glider trips can also be arranged.
In the area there is a variety of art galleries, villages and shops. This provides for interesting walkabouts or getting that special gift for the ones left at home or an item to take home as a reminder of the time spent at Plettenberg Park. For golf enthusiasts, the local country club has an excellent course and for those willing to drive a few extra kilometres, Fancourt, near George, which was designed by Gary Player is world class.
