Sights to see around Mthatha (Umtata) include historical buildings and museums, Sandstone City Hall and gardens built in 1908, located in town. St. Jan Cathedral, built in 1906 is also located in town.
Recreational and outdoor activities: the First Fall Waterfall, Luchaba Nature Reserve and Nduli Nature Reserve – all near town. Mthatha (Umtata) is the colourful and lively centre of the region. The former Transkei is now part of the Eastern Cape province.
